Because the mouth has so much in such a small area,
it is often useful to make modes of the teeth and gums
that can be studied outside the confines of cheeks and
lips. Models like these can be carefully studied alone
or mounted on a machine that simulates their relationship
in real life.
This machine, an "Articulator", allows the
dental team to see jaw to jaw, jaw to head and tooth to
tooth relationships. Stone casts (models) allow
identification of certain bite problems that are
difficult to see in the confines of the mouth.
